Stourport-on-Severn, West Midlands, UK
For Tesco Plc
Stouport-on-Severn was an important trading centre with the wool from the West Marches taken down the River Severn to the docks, or via the canal system in to the heart of the Midlands. Eventually a local wool industry became established with a reputation for quality carpets and on this site was one of the larger wool factories, which closed down in the 1990’s.
The new Tesco store design echoes the ‘saw-tooth’ northlight form of the carpet factory, which brings in a flood of daylight onto the retail floor. At the pedestrian entrance from the town centre an artist-designed pair of stainless steel gates also reflect the former steam-driven carpet machinery.
The 4150 square metre store with petrol station includes extensive landscaping which extends across two new river bridges.
A&Q Partnership have an on going relationship with Tesco and we are looking forward to further projects with them.
