Stouport-on-Severn was an important trading centre, with a reputation for quality carpets, in the heart of the Midlands until 1990’s. The Tesco store design echoes the ‘saw-tooth’ north light form of the carpet factory, which brings in a flood of daylight onto the retail floor. At the pedestrian entrance from the town centre an artist-designed pair of stainless steel gates also reflect the former steam-driven carpet machinery. The 4150 square meter store includes a petrol station alongside extensive landscaping which extends across two new river bridges.
